Oil on cotton

40 x 50 cm

DESCRIPTION

"Generations" presents one of Gil's most sophisticated explorations of pattern, color, and cultural memory. The composition features a central symmetrical structure reminiscent of traditional Kociewian textile designs, surrounded by more fluid, gestural elements that suggest the evolution and transformation of cultural forms over time. The vibrant palette of deep crimson and rose tones against subtle pinks creates a visual field that is simultaneously energetic and contemplative.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

The work is executed on fine art cotton canvas with multiple layers of oil paint. Gil's technique involves both additive and subtractive processes, with areas of built-up impasto contrasting with sections where the paint has been scraped back to reveal underlying layers; a physical manifestation of the archaeological approach to cultural memory that informs his practice.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

"Generations" addresses the transmission of cultural knowledge across time, examining how patterns and symbols evolve while maintaining connections to their origins. Three flowers, akin to the proverbial stages of human life, intertwine with each other.  The work can be read as a visual meditation on heritage, memory, and the dynamic nature of cultural identity. By juxtaposing structured pattern elements with more fluid, intuitive marks, Gil creates a visual dialogue between collective memory and personal expression.
