About The Practice
The work in brief
Peter Gil is a Polish artist working in oil and mixed media, based in northern Poland. His practice centres on the deconstruction and recontextualisation of Kociewian folk visual heritage: the embroidery patterns, floral motifs, and symmetrical compositions of the ethnocultural region of Kociewie on the Vistula.
The work operates at the intersection of post-folk aesthetics, critical regionalism,
and what has been described as the archival turn in contemporary painting, treating folk tradition not as ethnographic material but as a living compositional language.
Gil's background is atypical: he holds a law degree with a specialisation in energy transfer policy and spent a decade working with multinational corporate clients before returning to painting full-time. The practice began publicly in 2020.
