Oil on linen

80 x 100 cm

AUTHOR’S NOTE

When creating the work I was recalling the moment in time when one summer we were picking leaves, flowers and herbs to dry. After long hours of gathering the stems, leaves and flower buds full of pollen, we took all the plants to the back of the house. On an old wooden table we spread a thin linen cloth, on top of which we carefully laid out the florals. Through the upcoming day or two, all the critters still hiding within the green matter have time to run away, leaving them to peacefully dry up in a subtle breeze. The flowers, petals, pollen are thrown together just as in life, we are sometimes found in a completely strange environments. It is crucial to persevere the challenges we face, and in doing so remain accepting of the conditions that we are unable to change.

DESCRIPTION

"Strangers" presents an intricate botanical composition that exemplifies Gil's evolving exploration of organic forms and cultural symbolism. The painting features a harmonious arrangement of stylized plant elements rendered in a vibrant spectrum of colors—verdant greens, warm oranges, deep purples, and luminous turquoise—against a serene, neutral background. The flowing linear elements create a rhythmic dance across the canvas, with circular nodes punctuating the composition and creating visual anchors within the fluid movement. This delicate balance between structure and spontaneity produces a visual field that appears simultaneously ordered and organic, reflecting the natural world's inherent tension between chaos and pattern.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Executed on premium Belgian linen, this work showcases Gil's masterful command of color and line. The artist employs a distinctive technique where translucent layers of oil paint build subtle depth while maintaining the luminosity of each hue. The linear elements are applied with varying pressure and thickness, creating a dynamic sense of movement and spatial depth. Gil's meticulous attention to the relationship between positive and negative space allows the white ground to become an active element in the composition rather than merely a backdrop. This approach creates a visual lightness that contrasts with the conceptual weight of the piece, allowing the botanical forms to appear as if suspended in a moment of graceful animation.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

"Strangers" emerges from Gil's profound meditation on coexistence and adaptation. Inspired by the traditional practice of harvesting and drying plants for winter use, the work explores the metaphorical resonance between botanical preservation processes and human experiences of displacement and resilience. The artist recalls the specific memory of gathering plants during summer, spreading them on linen cloth where insects would depart while the plants dried in the breeze—a process that serves as a powerful metaphor for how beings adapt when placed in unfamiliar environments.

The intertwining botanical forms represent diverse entities brought together by circumstance, each maintaining its distinctive character while contributing to a harmonious whole. The circular nodes throughout the composition symbolize points of connection and transformation, moments where individual elements acknowledge their relationship to the collective. Through this visual vocabulary, Gil examines how we navigate environments where we may feel like "strangers," and how perseverance and acceptance become essential strategies for thriving amid unchangeable conditions.

This work continues Gil's exploration of how traditional practices and symbols can illuminate contemporary human experiences, bridging personal memory, cultural heritage, and universal themes of adaptation and coexistence.
